Challenge is to effectively use the technology you have
Trilogy of the Mind- Affective (feelings/motivation), Cognitive (thinking/skills), Conative (natural talent/knack)
85% of people are predominantly visual learners (pg 49)
Simple images are best to connect to prior knowledge OR place out of context as a tool to remember it
"Developing Technical Training"- Clark Key Points
"Instructional methods not media that impact learning" (pg 1)
Simple, organized text design (white space to separate information, headings/labels, organized chunks of information) (pg 37)
Detailed notes improve student learning outcomes
"Making Sense of Sensemaking"- Dervin Key Points from You Tube Video
Librarian lego minifig bridges the gap for the learner to find the information they are looking for
Tools that teachers give to students to find information are what the teacher is most comfortable with and NOT necessary what best helps each individual student
Communication problem- We fail to listen and are often asking the wrong questions
How to structure a bridge for the success of the learner?
Theory of how to conduct interviews
Image Survey- Related actual experience and how their experiences changed their understanding
Impact of readings on my DQ and Need to Knows I would like to be able to use Dervin's concept of conducting interviews and asking the right questions to be able to create a useful self-perception survey for struggling readers. My action research project was based on a single level of preparedness for a core ELA classroom question which I analyzed both quantitatively and qualitatively. I wonder if Dervin's image survey concept could be used to measure self-image rather than reflecting on an outside entity? Due to the very nature of my students ( lack of grade level reading abilities), I wonder how Baggio's focus on the importance of visual images could help my students? Clark also mentions using headings/simple text so how could that impact my survey? In order to be a useful tool, I would need to know what to do with the information once I survey the students? I am still struggling with how this all fits together, but I am shocked that I am actually taking away a small sense of Dervin's message because the first few times I read it- I was completely in the dark. I guess it took a Lego minifigure to help bridge the gap!
